24 февраля в РКЦ лекция проф. Даниэля Санвитто "Квантовые потоки света и материи: бесконечный поиск".
On 24th of February at 16:00 Prof. Daniele Sanvitto, a head of group at the Laboratory for Advanced Photonics, will hold a seminar in the Russian Quantum Center:
«Polaritons are among the most striking quasi-particles available in the field-theory toolkit: composed of both light and matter, they have entanglement built in on their intrinsic substance. At the same time, they have recently demonstrated a phase transition to a Bose-Einstein condensate state in semiconductors. The physics of these objects has been investigated with several impressive achievements, from superfluidity, lasing at room temperature, solitons, optical logic, black holes, and many others, yet the polariton era has not started until one has truly unravelled the polariton quantum nut. In this talk, we will discuss aspects related to this problem.
I will first discuss peculiarities of the polariton dynamics which, although fully classical, start to bear a resemblance to a quantum formulation of the problem and how this can be used for exotic applications. Using ultrafast techniques, we can observe the dynamics of a quantum fluid under direct injection, which spans from vortices of different spins to the simpler case of an expanding condensate against an obstacle or a wave travelling at half the speed of light. Prospects of applications towards polariton quantum simulators will be discussed. Furthermore, the effects of one of the most distinctive and attractive characteristics of polaritons, their strong nonlinearities, will be revealed by impinging the condensate with a highly dense state of photons, showing the appearance of a self focusing drop of fluid–similar to the backjet of a water droplet splashing into a pond–and by showing the appearance of shock waves and phase singularities of vortex states.
Finally, we will illustrate the recent theory of color correlations on the polariton condensate, as this is the perfect testbed of an open bosonic systems driven by pumping and decay. We will undress Glauber's theory of photon-correlations showing the bigger picture that arise when taking into account not only time but also the frequency domain.»
Prof. Daniele Sanvitto is head of group at the Laboratory for Advanced Photonics, which he founded in 2010 in the Institute of Nanoscience, and a grant holder from the European Research Council (ERC) for the project POLAFLOW "Polariton condensates: from fundamental physics to quantum based devices ". His interest lies in the classical and quantum dynamics of polaritons (strongly coupled light-matter quasi-particles in semiconductor microcavities). After graduating in Rome "La Sapienza" and obtaining his Ph. D. from the University of Cambridge, UK, he took up several prestigious fellowships (Marie Curie, Ramon y Cajal, etc.) in several European institutions, including the Institut Jacques Monod in Paris, the University of Sheffield in UK and Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, in Spain. He has authored over 150 articles (2 in Science, one in Nature and 5 in other journals of the Nature family, 16 Phys. Rev. Lett., etc.) with more than 2500 citations and a h-index of 29. He contributed to four books and is editor of the first volume to review the work done in the emergent field of polaritons in microcavities. He has strong collaborations with the UAM of Madrid, the LKB of Paris, the University of Princeton, the University of Southampton, the Imperial College London and the LPN in Marcoussis. Through his close collaboration with F.P. Laussy and their common interest for the quantum regime of polaritons, he is looking forward to develop another thriving collaboration with the Russian Quantum Center.
