Postdoctoral position (100%) granted by the Strategic Initiative Materials (SIM) of Flanders
The Faculty of Sciences, The Electron Microscopy for Materials Science (EMAT) research group, is seeking to fill the following full-time vacancy Postdoctoral position (100%) granted by the Strategic Initiative Materials (SIM) of Flanders
The Electron Microscopy for Materials Science (EMAT) research group of the University of Antwerp is looking for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of transmission electron microscopy of polymer-based composites to work in the framework of the InterPoCo project of the H-INT-S program of strategic basic research supported by the Strategic Initiative Materials of Flanders.
Job description
- You contribute to research in the field of transmission electron microscopy of polymer-based composites at the University of Antwerp.
- Your work will be part of a new Flemish network coordinating efforts of 5 Flemish universities and research centers in the framework of the project “Mechanical properties and chemical bonding at the interfaces in polymer-based composite materials” (InterPoCo) within the program “Looking at soft/hard matter composites” (H-INT-S). The network is focused at polymer-based composites and includes modeling, characterization and high-throughput validation. The work at EMAT focuses on the interfaces between the polymer matrix and the fillers (steel wires for improved mechanical properties and microcapsules for self-healing materials) and includes FIB sample preparation, in-situ nano-mechanical testing (tensile, compression, …) with a dedicated holder, EELS spectroscopy and bond characterization, HAADF-STEM imaging of interface structures, etc.
- You will have the opportunity to operate advanced instruments including a double-corrected and monochromated Titan cube, a probe-corrected Super X Titan cube, a Tecnai G2, a FIB/SEM Helios Nanolab 650, etc.
Profile and requirements
- Having a PhD in physics, chemistry, engineering or materials science.
- Research experience at an outstanding level in the field of transmission electron microscopy of polymers and/or polymer-based composites, demonstrated with an extensive CV and list of publications
- An advanced mastery of academic English
We offer
- A postdoctoral position (100%) for a period of minimally 1 year, full salary (min. € 3.896,31 before taxes and depending on years of relevant experience).
- The opportunity to renew the position up to 4 years depending on intermediate evaluation with a possibility of further prolongation.
- A (negotiable) start of the position envisaged for September 1, 2013.
- A dynamic, stimulating and international work environment in one of the top TEM research centers in the world (see also http://www.emat.ua.ac.be/ ) and in collaboration with prime laboratories in Leuven, Ghent and Brussels.
- Optimal conditions to further develop your research career in Flanders or abroad.
- A work location in the city of Antwerp, full of historical charm and modern convenience, and close to 'the Capital of Europe', Brussels.
