Bone tissue engineering: from bench to bedside. Maria A. Woodruff, Claudia Lange, Johannes Reichert, Arne Berner, Fulen Chen, Peter Fratzl, Jan-Thorsten Schantz, and Dietmar W. Hutmacher
The drive to develop bone grafts for the filling of major gaps in the skeletal structure has led to a major research thrust towards developing biomaterials for bone engineering. Hutmacher and co-workers describe the analysis of long-term bone regeneration studies in preclinical animal models, exploiting methods of micro- and nano analysis of biodegradable composite scaffolds.
Intracellular drug release nanosystems. Fenghua Meng, Ru Cheng, Chao Deng, and Zhiyuan Zhong
Zhong and colleagues highlight novel designs of smart nanosystems that release drugs in response to an intracellular biological signal of cancer cells such as acidic pH in endo/lysosomal compartments, enzymes in lysosomes, and redox potential in cytoplasm and the cell nucleus.
Microarrayed materials for stem cells Ying Mei
Stem cells hold remarkable promise for applications in disease modeling, cancer therapy, and regenerative medicine. Ying Mei discusses recent developments in materials microarray technology in relation to stem cell engineering.
Engineering ECM signals into biomaterials Ryan J. Wade and Jason A. Burdick
There has been a recent emphasis on increasing the biocomplexity of scaffolds to better mimic the natural extracellular matrix (ECM). In this review, Wade and Burdick describe the important features of the natural ECM and highlight how these features are now being incorporated into synthetic materials.
