The 2015 International Year of Light - Light Science, Biophotonics and Cytometry
Joint Virtual Issue from Cytometry Part A and Journal of Biophotonics
Edited by Journal of Biophotonics Editor-in-Chief Juergen Popp and Cytometry Part A Editor-in-Chief Attila Tarnok
The International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015) is the initiative created by UNESCO together with scientists, artists, engineers and others to raise awareness of the contributions of light science to humankind progress. This special year is therefore of high relevance to all photonics and biophotonics enthusiasts including basic and applied microscopists, cytometrists, spectroscopists and radiologists. This Joint Virtual Issue aims to highlight recent papers published in Cytometry Part A and Journal of Biophotonics that have taken full advantage of the state of the art light / photonic technologies to address crucial biomedical problems...
Overall, the work collected in this Virtual Issue represent nice and convincing examples why the UN proclaimed 2015 as "The International Year of Light and Light-based Technologiesrecognizing the importance of raising global awareness about how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges in energy, education, agriculture and health". The collection of articles demonstrates the large potential of light-based/photonic approaches for solving many biomedical challenges, i.e. unmet medical needs. In summary, the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 is the year of biophotonics and cytometry and is well represented by excellent science published inCytometry Part A and the Journal of Biophotonics.
